Robotics hogs the limelight at national-level tech fest
(Times of India, Friday, 12 September 2008)

Chennai: Budding engineers from across the country, given the opportunity to showcase their technical finesse, gathered on Thursday at SRM University to take part in 'Aarush '08', a four-day national-level festival.Among the various competitions on the inaugural day of the event on Thursday, 'Robogyaan', the robotics competition, hogged the limelight. Divided into three categories, the events tested the students' understanding of circuitry and engineering. While the 'Climbing Monk' competition involved creating a robot that could climb up and down a series of steps, another event pitted an automatic robot against a manually-controlled counterpart in a setting resembling a soccer match. 'Vision', a third contest, involved the skilful programming of software to convert images from an overhead camera into signals that would enable a robot to move."This is a direct application of software such as Matlab and Robo Real that we learn to use in class. Machine vision is used extensively in industry and this event will help students test how well they can programme the software," said Anirban Chowdhury, a final year Mechanical Engineering student, who is the co-ordinator for the event. In addition to testing their understanding, the events also gave the participants a chance to be ingenuous. The winners of the 'Climbing Monk' competition used simple materials such as plastic scales and plywood to make their robots."We used only two motors when compared to other teams which used five or six. Our design was simple but we made a lot of calculations, such as the angle at which the device should be kept so that it could climb easily," said Pramodh Chander Prasad from Sri Sairam Engineering College, a member of the winning team T- Bot. L Naresh of Danish Ahmed College, Padappai and V R Jayaram from KNNCE, Madurai completed T-Bot.A total of Rs 25 lakh would be given away as cash prizes for winners at the festival, SRM University vice-chancellor P Sathyanarayanan said. "The event has been completely managed and executed by the students. It will also give the winners an opportunity to participate in 'Kshitij, 2008', the annual festival organised by IIT-Kharagpur. Normally, students have to clear a screening test to be selected for the event but if they perform well here, they can gain direct entry to the finals," he said.
